Do you ever find yourself wondering what a particular foot for your machine does?

Do you know what all of your sewing machine feet and accessories do?

Do you have problems changing the feet on your machine?

Would you like to make the most of your sewing machine and learn more of what you can do with it?

There will be a selection of sewing machine feet available to try out during the class including:

  • Invisible (concealed) zipper foot
  • Standard zipper foot
  • Adjustable zipper/piping foot
  • Button sewing on foot
  • Automatic buttonhole foot
  • Overcast foot
  • Blind hem foot
  • Binder foot
  • Straight stitch foot
  • Ditch quilting foot/stitch in the ditch foot
  • 1/4″ seam foot
  • Rolled hem foot (4mm and 6mm)
  • Walking foot (even feed foot) and quilting guide
  • Open toe/darning foot

There will not be time to try out all of them in the 3 hour class but demonstrations of them will be done and you can prioritise which ones to try out yourself.

The feet that will be used during the workshop will be compatible with Janome sewing machines.

Introduction to patchwork and quilting

In the introduction to patchwork and quilting class, you will learn the essential basic skills of quilting and make a pretty patchwork sampler. This sewing class is suitable for those who have used a sewing machine before and can confidently thread the machine and bobbin. If you need a beginners class or a refresher then have a look at beginners classes available or get in touch for a 1 to 1 session.

You will learn:
  • What materials and equipment you will need in order to make a quilt
  • How to cut fabric pieces accurately using a rotary wheel, quilting ruler and self healing mat
  • How to use an even feed/walking foot
  • How to piece squares together accurately to make your sample topper
  • How to layer your quilt sampler together to prepare for the quilting stage
  • How to quilt your sample with a simple design
  • How to make your own quilt binding
  • How to bind your quilt sampler using the sewing machine and by hand
  • How to sew a mitred corner
You will make a quilt sampler that is a 3 X 3 square block (approx size 11.5″ x 11.5″) This would make a pretty wall hanging or mat to display flowers on/ornaments. The bias binding provided for the edging will be plain white. Equipment and Materials: What is included:
  • White bias binding for quilt binding
  • Wadding
  • White backing fabric
  • Machine thread
  • Use of Janome sewing machines and tools including rotary cutters, quilting rulers and self healing mats.
  • Photographic handout of the skills learnt in the workshop will be emailed to you after the class
What you need to bring:
  • Fabric squares for the patchwork front. You will need 9 squares of 4.5″ x 4.5″. Scraps of fabric or fat quarters would be ideal. You could have 9 different fabrics or as a minimum you could have 4 of one design and 5 of another.
Cost £50 Lorna says: “Patchwork and quilting can be extremely therapeutic and satisfying. This workshop is perfect for getting you started and will teach you the essential skills you would need to be able to go on and make your first quilt. Be warned – it can get addictive!!”

 

Beginners Sewing Class

Get to grips with sewing machine basics in this 3 hour beginners sewing class. Learn how to thread the machine, wind the bobbin, sew basic machine stitches (straight stitch, back stitch, zig zag) and simple trouble shooting tips. Put these skills into practice by making an envelope cushion cover. This class is suitable for complete beginners or those that are in need of a refresher. This class will hopefully give you the confidence that you need to go on and make some further more challenging projects – or if not, hundreds of cushion covers!!!! What is included?
  • Janome sewing machines and basic sewing tools provided to use
  • A selection of fabrics and threads will be available for you to choose from for the project. If you would prefer to bring your own fabric then please see details below
  • Handout with instructions to repeat the project at home will be emailed after the class
  • Tea/coffee
Optional bring your own:
  • Fabric
Woven non stretchy fabric e.g. 100% cotton, upholstery weight fabric (please get in touch if not sure about fabric) Remnant baskets of fabric shops/department stores are great places for picking up fabrics for cushion covers at reduced price. You could use an old curtain or bed sheet to practice on. If fabric is 115cm/45″ wide you will need 1m of fabric If fabric is 150cm/60″ wide you will need 1/2m of fabric

Gain confidence using a sewing machine – that’s what it’s all about. Children’s sewing class –

Learn to sew fabric bookmarks

This class is ideal for children who have never used a sewing machine before or if they don't feel that confident. Time will be spent at the beginning going through how to use the machine and practising. If your child has used a machine before then they will be able to crack on with the project and have more time to create!

In this children’s sewing class, you will learn how to make some fabulous fabric bookmarks.  Be inspired, unleash your creativity and learn a fantastic skill at the same time. There are 2 types of bookmarks and each one can be completely unique as you can customise them as you wish.

 

 

 

 

For children in Year 5 and above.

Equipment and Materials:

  • Janome sewing machines and basic sewing tools provided to use.
  • All fabric and materials for the project are included.
  • Soft drinks/biscuits included.

Other points to note:

  • Finger guards will be fitted to the sewing machines which prevent fingers getting too close to the sewing needle
  • I have an up to date DBS check

Other points to note:

  • There will be a selection of fabrics to choose from. Alternatively if you would prefer to supply your own fabric just let me know and I can give you the dimensions.

Sewcial Stitch

 

Do you have a project you have been meaning to start or finish and need a motivation boost?

Would you like to spend the afternoon sewing with others on your own individual project?

Come and spend a couple of hours in a friendly, sociable, creative setting and bring your own project to work on. What you need to bring? All materials needed to work on your own sewing project. (The group is not limited to machine sewing. Please feel free to come and hand sew, knit, crochet or do any non messy crafts!) What is included?
  • Full use of Janome sewing machines
  • Shared use of the studio overlocker
  • A selection of sewing tools available to use including rotary cutters and mats & sewing clips
  • Tea/coffee

Please note – this is a social group where the group can share ideas and help each other. There is no formal teaching although Lorna will be on hand for tips etc. If you are using one of the studio machines,  you need to have used a machine before and be happy to work independently during the session. Guidance will be given using the studio machines. If you would like a beginners class – see the workshop timetable or get in touch with Lorna to discuss 1 to 1 sessions.   Cancellations Please give as much notice as possible if you wish to cancel your booking, to give the opportunity for someone else to attend. If you wish to cancel a sewing club booking, for a full refund, at least 48 hours notice is required. This allows sufficient time to open up the space to someone else. The option to transfer to another class  will be offered (space permitting). If less than 48 hours notice is given, a refund will not be possible unless the space can be filled by someone else.

Learn to sew a drawstring backpack

This class is designed for children who have used a sewing machine before as there won't be time to go through how to use the machine (other than a quick refresher). If you are after a beginners children's class then the morning one would be more suitable - see here.

In this children’s sewing class, you will learn how to make an awesome drawstring backpack.  Be inspired, unleash your creativity and learn a fantastic skill at the same time. The backpack would be perfect for PE, sleepovers, dance club, library trips, car journeys, football kit – the list goes on!!!

For children in Year 5 and above.
