Learn to sew a hoodie – the Sew Over It Drew hoodie
The Drew hoodie from Sew Over It unisex pattern has a slightly oversized fit that suits all genders and is perfect as activewear or loungewear (taken from the Sew Over It website).
The hoodie features a front kangaroo style pocket, a classic waistband and cuffs. The hood is lined and is tightened with a drawstring. You can choose to use some eyelets or just make buttonholes to feed the drawstring through.
This is a Level 4 workshop and is suitable for those who are confident with the sewing machine and have sewn a garment with woven fabric. It is ideal to cut out the fabric pattern pieces in advance of the class to allow more time to sew on the day.
You will learn how to:
Tips on cutting stretch fabric accurately
Top tips on how to sew with stretch fabric on a regular sewing machine
Neatly top stitch on stretch fabrics – using a twin needle is optional
Insert eyelets with Prym variopliers (if choosing this version)
Sew buttonholes on stretch fabric (if choosing this version)
How to sew and attach a lined hood
How to use ribbing for cuffs and waistband
What is included:
Paper pattern and step by step instruction booklet – this will be sent to you in advance of the class if booked sufficiently in advance (this is a PDF only pattern but you will receive a printed version for the class. After the class you will receive a code from Sew Over It to download the PDF pattern free from their site).
Full tuition in order to make your garment
Cord and eyelets
Pattern sizing
The Drew sewing pattern is sized between UK sizes 6-30. Measurements will need to be provided in advance of the class as the pattern comes in 2 size bands.
You will need to measure your bust, waist and hips. Please refer to my blog post on measuring yourself accurately.
You will need to get:
Fabric – approximately 2.8m-4m (depends on your size). Upon booking you will be given guidance on how much fabric you will need based on your measurements.
Optional :
Ribbing – You can use separate ribbing for the cuffs, hem band or use the same fabric as the main garment if it has enough stretch
I would recommend using ribbing for cuffs etc, if main fabric has less than 20% stretch. You will need 0.4-0.6m of ribbing.
Fabric suggestions:
Mediumweight knit fabrics such as cotton sweatshirting, cotton fleece, polar fleece, French terry, Ponte di Roma and double knits with at least 15% stretch. You can use ribbing for the cuffs and hem (see size chart for requirements).
Please give me a call if you are in any doubt about fabric choices or suggestions of where to buy from.
It is recommended to pre wash your fabric before the workshop as it is likely to shrink a little in the first wash. Do not hang your fabric to dry as it will stretch out of shape – dry flat.
Prior to the class:
In order to allow as much time as possible for sewing on the day of the class, it will be preferable for you to cut out your fabric pieces in advance. Help will be given pre workshop about sizing if necessary. You will therefore need working knowledge of how to cut out a pattern independently in order to do this class. Any questions just get in touch.
Cost £115
Lorna says:
“This is a great pattern for everyone – learn to sew one for yourself and the whole family! I live in mine – it’s so comfy and will definitely take your sewing with stretch fabrics to the next level”

Pattern sizing
The Billie sewing pattern is sized between UK sizes 6-34.
You will need to measure yourself in order to know how much fabric to get. You cannot compare to high street sizes. Please get in touch if you are uncertain.
You will need to measure your bust, waist and hips. Please refer to my blog post on measuring yourself accurately.
You will need to get:
Fabric - approximately 1.5m-4m (depends on your size and which version). Upon booking you will be given guidance on how much fabric you will need based on your measurements.
Optional :
Ribbing - You can use separate ribbing for the cuffs, hem band, neckline or use the same fabric as the main garment.
I would recommend using ribbing for cuffs etc, if main fabric has less than 20% stretch. For a regular sleeve you will need 0.6m of ribbing and for the balloon sleeve you will need 0.7m of ribbing.
If your fabric is particularly stretchy you can stabilise the shoulder seams using 30cm (12″) of 6-9mm (1/4″) wide satin ribbon.
Fabric suggestions:
Sweatshirt fleece, French terry, Ponte Roma, double knit, interlock or sweater knit with at least 10% stretch.
Please give me a call if you are in any doubt about fabric choices or suggestions of where to buy from.
