Duration – 2 1/2 hours
This workshop is suitable for those with basic machine skills (able to thread the machine, wind a bobbin, sew a straight stitch).
**This workshop will be delivered virtually via the online video conferencing platform, Zoom. If you don’t already have a Zoom account, it is easy to set one up for free (basic package) via their website. On the day of the workshop I would email you the workshop joining instructions. Zoom allows 2 way communication between all participants and myself, allowing questions, feedback, demonstrations and conversation! It’s good fun and a great way to socialise with other people whilst sewing, during this period of lockdown.**
Learn how to applique
This workshop involves using appliqué to sew pieces of one/multiple fabrics onto a different fabric into a pattern or picture. It is a great project for unleashing your creativity and using up fabric scraps. The photos are just examples of my ideas but feel free to design your own – anything is possible!!
They would make a fantastic bespoke handmade gift for someone or to proudly put on display at home.
You will learn:
- How to appliqué using Bondaweb and the sewing machine
- How to make an envelope cushion cover
Any hand sewing of embellishments may need to be finished off after the workshop.
A cushion cover has been chosen for this workshop but once you know the technique, appliqué can be used to transform anything from PE bags, t-shirts, jackets….
Design
Please have a think about your design in advance of the workshop.
To find some potential templates to use, search ‘applique templates’ in google and you will find a selection of templates. You can use both pictures and letters. You can also free hand draw a design. My advice would be to keep it simple! Remember whatever your design, you are going to have to sew round the outside of the shapes so don’t go for anything too intricate!

“I love applique! It’s a great technique to use up all those treasured fabric scraps and is such a useful skill to have, I use it a lot to personalise or customise projects. It is an opportunity to make something truly unique!”
