This workshop is suitable for those who have used a sewing machine before and can confidently thread the machine and bobbin. If you need a beginners class or a refresher then have a look at beginners classes available. It is however a perfect first dressmaking project for those that have basic machine skills.

Learn how to sew an A-line skirt

New Look 6843 is a perfect project for beginner dressmakers. It is a classic a-line skirt and has features that are essential skills to learn when dressmaking - darts, waistband, applying interfacing, buttonholes, inserting a standard zip.

You will learn:

  • How to take essential body measurements and select your pattern size
  • How to identify pattern pieces required
  • How to lengthen/shorten pattern pieces if required
  • How to accurately cut out pattern pieces
  • How to identify the grainline of the fabric and lay out pattern pieces correctly
  • How to cut fabric accurately
  • How to use interfacing
  • How to sew darts
  • How to attach a waistband
  • How to insert a standard zipper
  • How to sew an automatic buttonhole on the machine
  • How to sew the skirt with tuition along the way

What is included:

  • Full individual use of Janome sewing machines
  • Use of sewing tools
  • Full tuition to make your garment
  • Paper pattern to take home and step by step instruction booklet worth £6.95. You will then be able to use the pattern to repeat the project at home.
  • Interfacing
  • Tea/coffee

Sizes the pattern covers:

  • Smallest size

waist 24″, hip 33.5″

  • Largest size

waist 32″, hip 42″

For help taking your body measurements please see my blog post here.

What you need to bring:

Fabric:

Cotton and cotton blends, crepe, rayon, linen and linen blends. These will be the easiest to sew with. If you are more experienced, for a softer look you could choose rayon or crepe.

7″ standard zipper

one 1/2″ button

Once you have taken your body measurements, compare them to the chart on the envelope back image below. If you are across sizes, go for the biggest size and then see how much fabric you need depending on whether it is 1.15m wide (45″) or 1.4m wide (55″). We will be making View D.

If you are tall or will be matching patterns/stripes then you will need more than that amount.

If you have any questions at all, just email me your body measurements and I will help you.

Images of the pattern and size chart can also be viewed here.

Lorna says:

“An a-line skirt is a great pattern to learn especially as a beginner dressmaker. By changing the fabric you can really change the look and style of the skirt. This pattern was my first ever me-made garment - sewing 2 of them in June/July 2014. I still wear them now and have recently made a denim version too. So many essential skills are included in this skirt including how to sew an automatic buttonhole using the sewing machine - awesome!!“
