Do sewing patterns leave you confused and not know where to start?
Do you get baffled with all of the terms and symbols on sewing patterns?
Would you like to learn to follow a sewing pattern in order to make projects for yourselves and others?
Join me and learn all about how to read sewing patterns effectively in this 2 hour interactive workshop.
**This workshop will be delivered virtually via the online video conferencing platform, Zoom. If you don’t already have a Zoom account, it is easy to set one up for free (basic package) via their website. On the day of the workshop I would email you the workshop joining instructions. Zoom allows 2 way communication between all participants and myself, allowing questions, feedback, demonstrations and conversation! It’s good fun and a great way to socialise with other people whilst sewing, during this period of lockdown.**
A lot of the focus will be on dressmaking but lots of it will be really useful for using commercial patterns to make non dressmaking projects too.
You will learn:
- How to measure yourself accurately (this is vital in order to determine which size pattern to use)
- How to translate your body measurements and use the pattern tables to determine how which size pattern to cut and how much fabric and notions to buy
- How to select which pattern pieces to use
- Common symbols and abbreviations used on sewing patterns
- How to identify the selvedge and grainline of fabric and layout your pattern pieces correctly on the fabric
- Methods used to transfer pattern markings onto the fabric.
What you will need:
- If you want to have a go at measuring yourself then a tape measure will be needed.
- If you have any sewing patterns at home or sewing magazines then you may wish to have them to hand.
- Notebook and pen if you want to take notes
- A cup of tea!!
What is provided:
- Handouts with key information from the workshop will be emailed to you after the workshop
Cost: £15
Please note:
There is no actual sewing involved in this workshop. Practical demonstrations will take place throughout the class on measuring yourself accurately, laying out of fabric and pattern pieces etc. The aim of this workshop is to give you the knowledge and skills to be able to get to the actual ‘sewing stage’ of a project and have a go.
